This is a Pipe
"This is a Pipe" asks what makes a painting itself become more important than the subject matter or the artist. The series is inspired by Rene Magritte's 1929 painting, The Treachery of Images, which contains an image of a pipe with the words "This is Not a Pipe." The series will explore famous artworks that have been vandalized or stolen and thus have developed identities independent from their ordinary place in the canon of art history. Those independent identities, which would not have existed but for the vandalism or theft, have created new meanings for these works of art. Perhaps these new identities are more relevant today than the pieces as they were originally conceived.
